Man Who Mysteriously Disappeared Shows up Miffin Holton, of Pamlico, Gives no Explanation (Special to the Star) NEW BERN, Jan. ’9.—Miffln Holton, Olympia white man, who dropped out of sight mysteriously last summer, has returned to His wife and family there, according to a report reaching here to day, and as mysteriously as he depart ed, Holton himself refuses to discuss his sojourn and members of his family, if they know anything, are keeping it under cover. Holton, who owned his farm near Olympia, five miles north of here, work ed in a local barber shop on Saturdays. One Saturday afternoon last summer he left his work, presumably to do some shopping, and never came back. When last seen he was on a Norfolk Southern train en route to Goldsboro. For weeks afterwards Mrs. Holton sought in vain for her husband through corretepondence with police depart ments in this and adjoining states, and newspapers carried notices, but not one word was heard from the missing man. A night or so ago he appeared at his home, apparently none the worse for his six months of self-imposed exile, but as silent as the proverbial clam. Fuller Introduces Sub For Bursum Bill WASHINGTON, Jan. 9.—Chairman Fuller of the house pension committee, introduced today a pension bill similar to the Bursum bill, which was vetoed by President Harding’ last week, but with some of the features cited as ob jectionable by the president omitted The Fuller bill would increase the compensation of civil war veterans, en titled to pensions under existing law, to $72 a month, and of widows of vet erans to $50 a month. C. Hewlett to be Buried Today Many friends are grieved at the death of Mrs. Nannie C. Hewlett, which oc curred yesterday afternoon at 1:30 o’clock, at her residence, 312 North Seventh street. , 'Mrs. Hewlett was in her 66tli year, and was tl^e widow of John Jesse Hew lett, who preceded her to the grave 25 years Ago. ' She is survived by two sons, Henry Ndrcum Hewlett and E. O. Hewlett; two daughters, Miss Lilly Hewlett and Mrs. J. A. Peebles, all of Wilmington, and four grandchildren. Funeral services wrill be conducted at Masonboro Baptist church this morning at ll o’clock, by the Rev. J. A. Sulli van, pastor, of Calvary Baptist church. The general subject is "The Minister and His Message,’’ and the topics of the eight lectures in the course are as follows: (1) A Poor Bus iness But a Great Calling; (2) The Summons of Service; (3) The Preacher and a Bankrupt World; (4) The Preacher and Hig Message; (5) The Man Behind the" Message; T6) The Preacher in Action; (7) The Drab and Geld in the Great Calling; and (8) The World’s Grectest* Preacher. Since its etsablishment 11 years age. this lectureship has not only brought to the seminary many .men from abroad, like Dr. James . Stalker, Sir William Ramsay and Dr. G. Kinston Women Carry School Bond Election (Special to the Star) KINSTON, Jan. 9.—Women car ried a bond election here today. Hundreds joined in balloting for a $300,000 Issue for school improve ments. The registration pras less than ■ 1,700. The majofrlty of the bond's adherents over both the active and “silent” vote of the antis was overwhelming. It was the fourth proposition of the school authorities. Two never reached the polls. The third was voted down, “pros” aiding In its defeat, because of the smallness of the issue. The $300,000 voted today will alleviate congestion in the schools."1.
